Functional safety  is the part of the overall  safety  of a  system  or piece of equipment that depends on automatic protection operating correctly in response to its inputs or failure in a predictable manner (fail-safe). The automatic protection system should be designed to properly handle likely human errors, hardware failures and operational/environmental stress. 功能安全 （ Functional Safety ）也稱為 機能安全 ，是指和一個 系統 或是 設備 整體安全的組成部份 [1]  。其達成安全性的方式是靠系統或組成零件在接受輸入訊號後，可以正常的動作 [2] 。例如一個馬達中加裝溫度感測器，若溫度超過一定值，即停止馬達運轉，此機能就屬於功能安全。
